DALLAS, TX — The Dallas Police Department has provided a glimpse into the work of the Cold Case Squad, a team re-established in 2016 to investigate more than 2,000 unsolved homicides in the area. The squad is comprised of four detectives and one sergeant which have solved more than 15 "unsolved" homicide cases, DPD said in a news release.

"The Cold Case Squad has been able to bring justice with arrests, clearances, and convictions, as well as providing much-needed relief and closure to the families and friends of the victims," DPD added. Dallas-Fort Worth’s housing market is on fire, earning the Metroplex a spot on Zillow’s new ranking of the country’s 10 hottest real estate markets in 2019. At No. 7, DFW is the only major Texas metro area to show up on Zillow’s list.

Six Years Into GrowSouth, Developers Are Starting To Pay Attention To Southern Dallas

Mayor Mike Rawlings pointed to the redevelopment of Red Bird Mall as a focus area in the next year.

Mayor Mike Rawlings says southern Dallas is headed in the right direction.

The mayor yesterday delivered the annual progress report for GrowSouth. For the last six years, the initiative’s been working to jump-start growth in southern Dallas.

Rawlings pointed to some promising numbers: The population has grown by about 7 percent. Per capita income and real estate values are up, and median home sales have increased by 146 percent.

The mayor said developers are paying attention.

“Six years ago, they didn’t even know where Southern Dallas was. It was like, ‘what are you talking about?’ Now they understand what we’re doing and they’ve seen other people make some investments,” he said.

D-FW apartment rents inch up in first quarter as construction surges

North Texas apartment demand couldn’t keep up with construction in the first quarter.

But that didn’t mean renters caught a break.

Average apartment rents in the Dallas-Fort Worth were up 1.9 percent from first quarter 2017 to $1,081 a month, according to the latest data from RealPage.

The Richardson-based apartment industry service firm estimates that net D-FW apartment leasing totaled 1,721 units in the first three months of 2018.

That’s an improvement from first quarter 2017 when there was a small decline in net leasing.

The early months of the year are typically the slowest period for apartment leasing.

Apartment demand fell way short of the 6,972 new rental units that opened their doors in the first quarter.
